Two constables on Thursday looted over Rs 36 million from exchequer of Railway Workshops Division, which were supposed to be paid to the employees as salaries.

According to a handout of the Pakistan Railways, the amount was shifted to the treasurer of the Railways Workshops Division through a private security company at 4:00 pm on December 28.

As per rules, guards present on duty shifted the amount into strong room and sealed it. However, on December 29, at 7:50 am, Sub-Inspector Khalid Mahmood informed the Divisional Pay Master, Muhammad Arshad at his home that amount over Rs 36 million have been looted.

According to initial information, Constables Muhammad Nawaz and Saeed Ahmed committed the dacoity along with their accomplices. They gave some intoxicated eatables to guards present on duty. Later they fled with three bags of currency and weapons of the guards.

On information, railway police officers and other officers reached the spot where on checking they found a private lock on strong room. A constable namely Kamran Rafi was locked inside the strong room with his hands tied behind him. Railway Police after registration of FIR has arrested one accused and further investigation was under way.

Federal Minister for Railways, Mian Shamim Haider, has directed that the looted amount should be recovered immediately and stern action should be taken against the culprits under the law. Meanwhile, General Manager (Operations) Saleem ur Rehman Akhund has ordered immediate payment of salaries to the employees.
